Both Good and Bad News at the Native American Casino Summit

A July 17, 2012 summit in New York City allowed Native American tribes and bond investors to discuss current trends in the casino industry, with the final determination that big tribal casino projects may be a thing of the past but online gaming is progressing. The summit was sponsored by the Native American Finance Officers Association

Highlights of the summit include:
  • Casino financing is “challenging.”  High-risk projects will be difficult to finance but smaller, well-structured deals with good borrowers are still viable
  • Casino supply growth “continues to be a concern” over the next five years, but demand in the Northeast may still increase
  • Casinos have had lower returns than they have had in the past five years, and
  • Internet poker may be legal for Indian gaming within the next ten years.
