Native American Tribes Can Soon Purchase FEHB Health Coverage for Employees

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has announced that Indian tribes, tribal organizations and urban Indian organizations will soon be able to purchase Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) for their employees.  The effective date of coverage will be May 1, 2012 or after.

The OPM has selected the National Finance Center (NFC) to service this program.  NFC, which also serves as payroll provider for the Temporary Continuation of Coverage program, will charge an administrative load of less than 1.75% of average FEHB premium.

All Tribal organizations that wish to participate in the program with the May 1, 2012 effective date will need to notify the OPM by February 1, 2012 at either tribalprograms@opm.gov or (202) 606-2530.

For detailed information about the FEHB program for Indian tribes including timelines for enrollment, rates and employee guides, please visit the OPM website.
